Understanding GST

Understanding GST (Goods and Services Tax)

Goods and Services Tax (GST) is a comprehensive indirect tax on the supply of goods and services in India. It replaced multiple cascading taxes levied by the central and state governments. Understanding GST calculations is essential for both businesses and consumers.

GST Calculation Methods

GST Exclusive (Adding GST to Price)

This method calculates the GST amount to be added to the original price.

GST Amount = Original Price × (GST Rate / 100)
Final Price = Original Price + GST Amount

GST Inclusive (Extracting GST from Price)

This method extracts the GST amount from a price that already includes GST.

GST Amount = Original Price − [Original Price × (100 / (100 + GST Rate))]
Net Price (without GST) = Original Price − GST Amount

GST Rate Slabs in India

GST Rate Types of Goods & Services
5% Essential commodities, packaged food items, transport services
12% Basic necessities like some processed foods, apparel, medicines
18% Standard rate for most items including electronics, telecom, financial services
28% Luxury items, premium cars, tobacco products, aerated drinks

CGST & SGST Breakdown

For intra-state transactions (within the same state), GST is divided equally between:

  • CGST (Central GST): Collected by the Central Government
  • SGST (State GST): Collected by the respective State Government

For example, if the GST rate is 18%, then CGST would be 9% and SGST would be 9%.

IGST for Inter-State Transactions

For inter-state transactions (between different states), Integrated GST (IGST) is applicable. IGST is the sum of CGST and SGST, and is collected by the Central Government.
